The Beginning (Genesis) 32

  1Heel-Grabber (Jacob) went on his way, and the angels of God (Elohiym) met him.

 2When Heel-Grabber (Jacob) saw them, he said, “This is God (Elohiym)'s host.” and he called the name of that place Two Camps (Mahanaim).

 3Then Heel-Grabber (Jacob) sent messengers before him to Hairy (Esau) his brother in the land of Shaggy (Seir), the country of Red (Edom).

 4And he commanded them, saying, “Tell my lord Hairy (Esau); Your servant Heel-Grabber (Jacob) says, I have been living with White (Laban), and have stayed there until now:

 5I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and men servants, and women servants: and I have sent this message to my lord, that I may find grace in your sight.”

 6The messengers returned to Heel-Grabber (Jacob), saying, “We went to your brother Hairy (Esau). He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

 7Then Heel-Grabber (Jacob) was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands.

 8He said, “If Hairy (Esau) comes to the one company, and attacks, then the other company which is left should be able to escape.”

 9Heel-Grabber (Jacob) prayed, “O God (Elohiym) of my father Father of a Multitude (Abraham), and God (Elohiym) of my father Laughter (Isaac), I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) You said to me, Return to your country, and to your kindred, and I will deal well with you.

 10I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which you have shown your servant. I passed over this Descender (Jordan) with only my staff, and now I have become two bands.

 11Deliver me please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Hairy (Esau): for I fear him, lest he will come and kill me, and the mothers with the children.

 12You said, “I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.”

 13And he lodged there that night and gathered a present for Hairy (Esau) his brother from all that he had earned.

 14Two hundred she goats and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

 15Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she asses and ten foals.

 16He delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between drove and drove.”

 17He gave the first drove orders saying, “When Hairy (Esau) my brother meets you, and asks you, saying, Whose are you? and where are you going? and whose are these with you?

 18Then you shall say, “They are your servant Supplanter's (Jacob); it is a present sent to my lord Hairy (Esau). He is coming behind us.”

 19And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, This is what to say to Hairy (Esau), when you find him.

 20And be sure to tell him, “Your servant Heel-Grabber (Jacob) is behind us.” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.”

 21So the present went over before him: and he stayed that night in the camp.

 22He rose up before dawn, and took his two wives, and his two women servants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

 23He sent them over the brook along with all that he had.

 24And Heel-Grabber (Jacob) was left alone; and there a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.

 25When he saw that he could not overcome, he touched the hollow of his thigh so the hollow of Heel-Grabber (Jacob)'s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

 26The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” He said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.”

 27He asked him, “What is your name?” He answered, “Heel-Grabber (Jacob).”

 28The man said, “Your name will no longer be called Heel-Grabber (Jacob), but God Prevails (Israel): for as a prince has, you have power with God (Elohiym) and with men, and have prevailed.”

 29Heel-Grabber (Jacob) asked him, “Please tell me your name.” The man replied, Why is it that you ask about my name?” And he blessed him there.

 30Then Heel-Grabber (Jacob) called the name of the place Facing God (Peniel): for I have seen God (Elohiym) face to face, and my life is preserved.

 31As he passed over Facing God (Peniel) the sun rose upon him, and he was limping because of his thigh.

 32Therefore the children of God Prevails (Israel) do not eat the sinew which shrank, which is in the hollow of the thigh, to this day: because he touched the hollow of Heel-Grabber (Jacob)'s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

The Beginning (Genesis) 31

   1Heel-Grabber (Jacob) heard the words of White (Laban)'s sons, saying, “Heel-Grabber (Jacob) hath taken away all that was our father's. He has gotten all this glory from that which was our father's.”

 2And Heel-Grabber (Jacob) realized White's (Laban) attitude towards him was not as it had been before.

 3I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) said to Heel-Grabber (Jacob), “Return to the land of your fathers, and to your family. I will be with you.”

 4Heel-Grabber (Jacob) sent and called Ewe (Rachel) and Weary (Leah) to meet him the field where his flock was,

 5And said to them, “I see your father's attitude towards me is not like it was before; but the God ('Elohiym) of my father has been with me.

 6You know that with all my power I have served your father.

 7And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God ('Elohiym) did not permit him to hurt me.

 8If he said, 'The speckled shall be your wages'; then all the flock bore speckled: and if he said, 'The striped shall be your hire; then all the flock bore striped.

 9God ('Elohiym) hath taken away the flock of your father, and given them to me.

 10And it came to pass at the time that the flock conceived, that I lifted up my eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the sheep and the goats were striped, speckled, and spotted.

 11The angel of God ('Elohiym) spake unto me in a dream, saying, “Heel-Grabber (Jacob)': And I said, 'Here am I.'

 12He said, 'Lift up your eyes now, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are striped, speckled, and spotted: for I have seen all that White (Laban) has done to you.

 13I am the God ('Elohiym) of the House of God (Bethel), where you anointed the pillar, and where you vowed a vow unto me: now arise, get out from this land, and return unto the land of your family.'”

 14Ewe (Rachel) and Weary (Leah) answered, “Is there any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?

 15Are we not regarded by him as strangers? He sold us, and has devoured our money as we;;.

 16For all the riches God ('Elohiym) has taken from our father is ours, and our children's. Now then, whatever God ('Elohiym) has said to you, do.”

 17So Heel-Grabber (Jacob) rose up, and set his sons and his wives on camels;

 18And he carried away his whole flock, and all his goods which he had gotten, the flock which he had gotten in Field (Padanaram), and prepared to go to Laughter (Isaac) his father in the land of the Humbled One (Canaan).

 19When White (Laban) went to shear his sheep Ewe (Rachel) stole her father's images,

 20And Heel-Grabber (Jacob) stole away unawares to White (Laban) the Exalted (Syrian) without telling him he was leaving.

 21So he fled with all that he had. He rose up, and passed over the river, and headed toward the mount Rocky Region (Gilead).

 22On the third day White (Laban) was told that Heel-Grabber (Jacob) had fled.

 23He took his brethren with him, and pursued him for seven days. They overtook him in the hill country of Rocky Region (Gilead).

 24God ('Elohiym) came to White (Laban) the Exalted (Syrian) in a dream by night, and said to him, “Be careful not to speak to Heel-Grabber (Jacob) either good or bad.”

 25Then White (Laban) overtook Heel-Grabber (Jacob). Now Heel-Grabber (Jacob) had pitched his tent in the mount: and White (Laban) with his brethren pitched in the mount of Rocky Region (Gilead) as well.

 26White (Laban) said to Heel-Grabber (Jacob), “Why have you done this? You have stolen away without me knowing, and carried away my daughters like captives taken with the sword?

 27Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me? Had you told me me, that I might have sent you away with laughter, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?

 28You didn't even allow me to kiss my sons and my daughters? You have been foolish in doing so.

 29It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God ('Elohiym) of your father spoke unto me the night before last, saying, “Be careful not to speak to Heel-Grabber (Jacob) either good or bad.

 30I understand that you long for your father's house, but why have you stolen my gods ('elohiym)?”

 31Heel-Grabber (Jacob) answered White (Laban), “Because I was afraid. I thought, what if you would take your daughters from me by force.

 32With whom you find your gods ('elohiym), let him not live. Right now in front of everyone, search for them! But Heel-Grabber (Jacob) didn't know that Ewe (Rachel) had stolen them.

 33White (Laban) went into Heel-Grabber (Jacob)'s tent, and into Weary (Leah)'s tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he didn't find them. Then went he out of Weary (Leah)'s tent, and entered Ewe (Rachel)'s tent.

 34Now Ewe (Rachel) had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat on them. White (Laban) searched all the tent, but didn't find them.

 35he said to her father, “Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before you, for the custom of women is on me.” So he searched but didn't find the images.

 36Heel-Grabber (Jacob) was angry, and argued with White (Laban), “What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued after me?”

 37You have searched all my stuff, what have you found of your stuff? Set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us.

 38I have been with you twenty years. Your ewes and your she goats have not cast their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock.

 39If any were attacked and killed by wild animals, I never showed you the carcass and asked you to reduce the count of your flock. No, I took the loss myself! You made me pay for every stolen animal, whether it was taken in broad daylight or in the dark of night.

 40In the scorching heat and through the cold nights I worked and hardly slept.

 41I been in your house twenty years. I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your herd and you have changed my wages ten times.

 42Except for the fact that the God ('Elohiym) of my father, the God ('Elohiym) of Father of a Multitude (Abraham), and the fear of Laughter (Isaac), was with me, surely you would have sent me away empty. God ('Elohiym) has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you in that dream.

 43White (Laban) answered Heel-Grabber (Jacob), These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that you see is mine: and what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children which they have born?

44Now therefore come, let us make a covenant, you and me. Let it be a witness between you and me.

 45Heel-Grabber (Jacob) took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.

 46Heel-Grabber (Jacob) said to his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did ate a covenant meal there on the heap.

 47White (Laban) called it Witness Heap (Jegar-sahadutha): but Heel-Grabber (Jacob) called it Witness Heap (Galeed). *

 48White (Laban) said, This heap is a witness between you and I this day. Therefore was the name of it called Witness Heap (Galeed);

 49And Watchtower (Mizpah) ; for he said, I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) will watch between you and me, when we are absent one from another.

 50If you mistreat my daughters, or if you take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God ('Elohiym) is witness between you and me.

 51White (Laban) said to Heel-Grabber (Jacob), “See this heap and this pillar I have set up?

 52This heap is witness, and this pillar is witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you, and that you will not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.

 53The God ('Elohiym) of Father of a Multitude (Abraham), and the God ('Elohiym) of Snorting (Nahor), the God ('Elohiym) of their father, judge between us.” And Heel-Grabber (Jacob) swore by the fear of his father Laughter (Isaac).

 54Then Heel-Grabber (Jacob) offered a sacrifice on the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they ate, and stayed the night on the mount.

 55Early in the morning White (Laban) rose up, and kissed his grandsons and his daughters, and blessed them: and White (Laban) departed, and returned unto his place.
