At that time, that Praised (Judah) went down from his brothers, and visited a man from Justice of the People (Adullam), whose name was A Noble Family (Hirah).
There Praised (Judah) saw a daughter of the Humbled Ones (Canaanites), whose name was Wealth (Shuah); and he took her, and went in to her.
She conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Awake (Er).
Then she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Strong (Onan).
Again she conceived, and bore a son; and called his name A Petition (Shelah): and he was at False (Chezib) , when she bore him.
Praised (Judah) took a wife for Awake (Er) his firstborn, whose name was Date Palm (Tamar).
But, Awake (Er), Praised's (Judah) firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
So Praised (Judah) said to Strong (Onan), “Go into your brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed for your brother.”
Strong (Onan) knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went into his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: therefore He slew him also.
Then said Praised (Judah) to Date Palm (Tamar) his daughter in law, “Remain a widow at your father's house, till A Petition (Shelah) my son be grown” For he said, “Lest peradventure he die also, as his brothers did.” So Date Palm (Tamar) went and dwelt in her father's house.
After many years, the daughter of Wealth (Shuah) Praised (Judah)'s wife died. To comfort himself, Praised (Judah) went up to his sheep shearers in Portion (Timnath) with his friend A Noble Family (Hirah) the one from Justice of the People (Adullam).
It was told to Date Palm (Tamar), saying, “Your father in law is going up to Portion (Timnath) to shear his sheep.”
So she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her face with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which was on the way to Portion (Timnath); for she saw that A Petition (Shelah) was grown, and she was not given to him to wife.
When Praised (Judah) saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, because she had covered her face.
He turned to her by the road, and said, “Let me come in to you.” (For he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, “What will you give me, that you might come in to me?”
And he said, “I will send a kid from the flock.” She replied, Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”
He asked, “What pledge should I give you?” She said, “Your signet, and your bracelets, and your staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.
She arose, and went away, and took her veil off, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
Praised (Judah) sent the kid by the hand of his friend the one from Justice of the People (Adullam), to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he didn't find her.
Then he asked the men of that place, “Where is the harlot, that was by the way side?” And they said, “There was no harlot in this place.”
He returned to Praised (Judah), and said, “I cannot find her; and the men of the place said, that there was no harlot there.”
Praised (Judah) said, “Let her keep it , lest we be shamed. I set this kid, and you have not found her.”
And it came to pass about three months later, Praised (Judah)was told that Date Palm (Tamar), his daughter in law, has played the harlot; and also she was with child by whoredom. So Praised (Judah) said, “Bring her out, and let her be burnt.”
When she was brought out, she sent to her father in law, saying, “By the man, whose these are, I am with child.” She said, “Tell me who do these belong to: this the signet, and bracelets, and staff?”
Praised (Judah) acknowledged them, and said, “She has been more righteous than I; because I did not give her to A Petition (Shelah) my son.” And he knew her again no more.
,When she went into labor there were twins in her womb.
And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”
Then he drew back his hand and his brother came out. She said, “How have you broken forth? What a breach!” Therefore his name was called Breach (Pharez).
And afterward his brother came out. The one that had the scarlet thread on his hand: and his name was called Rising (Zarah).
