Judges 2

1 Then an angel of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) came up from Rolling Wheel (Gilgal) to Weeping (Bochim), and said, I made you go up out of Double Straights (Egypt), and have brought you to the land which I swore to your fathers; and I said: I will never break My covenant with you.

2 You were to make no league with the inhabitants of this land; you were to throw down their altars: but you have not obeyed My voice: why have you done this?

3 Wherefore I also said: I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.

4 Then it came to pass, when the angel of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) spoke these words to all the children of God Prevails (Israel), that the people lifted their voice, and wept.

5 So they called the name of that place Weeping (Bochim): and they sacrificed there to I AM (the LORD, Yehovah).

6 When I AM is Salvation (Joshua) had let the people go, the children of God Prevails (Israel) went every man to his inheritance to possess the land.

7 And the people served I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) all the days of I AM is Salvation (Joshua), and all the days of the elders that outlived I AM is Salvation (Joshua), who had seen all the great works of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah), that he did for God Prevails (Israel).

8 When I AM is Salvation (Joshua) the son of Nun, the servant of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah), died, being a hundred and ten years old,

9 They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Portion of the Sun (Timnathheres), in the mount of Double Ash-Heap: Doubly Fruitful (Ephraim), on the north side of the hill Quaking (Gaash).

10 All that generation were gathered to their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, who knew not I AM (the LORD, Yehovah), nor yet the works which He had done for God Prevails (Israel).

11 Then the children of God Prevails (Israel) did evil in the sight of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah), and served Great High Places (Baalim):

12 They forsook I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Double Straights (Egypt), and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves to them, and provoked I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) to anger.

13 Then they forsook I AM (the LORD, Yehovah), and served Great High Place (Baal) and Star (Ashtaroth), Queen of Heaven.

14 So the anger of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) was hot against God Prevails (Israel), and He delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and He sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

15 Wherever they went, the hand of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) was against them for evil, as I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) had said, and as I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) had sworn to them: and they were greatly distressed.

16 Nevertheless I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

17 Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves to them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah); but they did not.

18 When I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) raised up judges, then I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) repented because they groaned because of those who oppressed them and vexed them.

19 But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

20 And the anger of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) was hot against God Prevails (Israel); and He said: Because these people have transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not listened to My voice;

21 In the future, I will not drive out any from before them of the nations which I AM is Salvation (Joshua) left when he died:

22 That through them I may test God Prevails (Israel), whether they will keep the way of I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

23 Therefore I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) left those nations, without driving them out utterly; neither did He deliver them into the hand of I AM is Salvation (Joshua).

Judges 1

1 Now after the death of I AM is Salvation (Joshua) it came to pass, that the children of God Prevails (Israel) asked I AM (the LORD, Yehovah), saying: Who shall go up for us against the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) first, to fight against them?

2 I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) answered: Praised (Judah) shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3 So Praised (Judah) said to Heard (Simeon) his brother: Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Humbled Ones (Canaanites); and I likewise will go with you into your lot. So Heard (Simeon) went with him.

4 Then Praised (Judah) went up; and I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) delivered the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) and the Those Belonging to a Village (Perizzites) into their hand: and they slew in Lightning (Bezek) ten thousand men.

5 There they found Lord of Lightning (Adonibezek) in Lightning (Bezek): and they fought against him, and they slew the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) and the Those Belonging to a Village (Perizzites).

6 But Lord of Lightning (Adonibezek) fled. They pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7 Then Lord of Lightning (Adonibezek) said: Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their food under my table: as I have done, so God ('Elohiym) has requited me. Then they brought him to Rain of Peace (Jerusalem), and there he died.

8 Now the children of Praised (Judah) had fought against Rain of Peace (Jerusalem), had taken it, smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

9 Afterward the children of Praised (Judah) went down to fight against the Humbled Ones (Canaanites), that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

10 Then Praised (Judah) went against the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) that dwelt in Association (Hebron): (now the name of Association (Hebron) before was City of the Four (Kirjatharba).) There they slew Noble (Sheshai), My Brother is a Gift (Ahiman), and Furrowed (Talmai).

11 From there he went against the inhabitants of Sanctuary (Debir): and the name of Sanctuary (Debir) before was City of the Book (Kirjathsepher):

12 Dog (Caleb) said: He that captures City of the Book (Kirjathsepher), and takes it, to him will I give Anklet (Achsah) my daughter to wife.

13 Lion of God (Othniel) the son of Hunter (Kenaz), Dog (Caleb)'s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Anklet (Achsah) his daughter as wife.

14 When she came to him, she convinced him to ask her father for a field. She lighted from off her ass; and Dog (Caleb) said to her: What do you want?

15 She answered him: Give me a blessing: for you have given me a south land; give me also springs of water. So, Dog (Caleb) gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16 Then the children of the Smith (Kenite), Drawn’s (Moses) father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Praised (Judah) into the wilderness of Praised (Judah), which lies in the south of Wild Ass (Arad); and they went and dwelt among the people.

17 Then Praised (Judah) went with Heard (Simeon) his brother, and they slew the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) that inhabited Watch-Tower (Zephas), and utterly destroyed it. The name of the city was called Devotion (Hormah).

18 Also Praised (Judah) took The Strong (Gaza) with the surrounding land, The Fire of Infamy: Weighed (Askelon) with the surrounding land, and Torn Up by the Roots (Ekron) with the surrounding land.

19 I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) was with Praised (Judah); and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20 They gave Association (Hebron) to Dog (Caleb), as Drawn (Moses) said: and he expelled from there the three sons of Neck (Anak).

21 The children of Son of the Right Hand (Benjamin) did not drive out the Trodden Underfoot (Jebusites) that inhabited Rain of Peace (Jerusalem); but the Trodden Underfoot (Jebusites) dwell with the children of Son of the Right Hand (Benjamin) in Rain of Peace (Jerusalem) to this day.

22 Then the house of I AM Will Add (Joseph) went up against The House of God (Bethel): and I AM (the LORD, Yehovah) was with them.

23 The house of I AM Will Add (Joseph) sent spies to The House of God (Bethel). (Now the name of the city before was Almond Tree (Luz).)

24 When the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him: Show us, we pray, the entrance into the city, and we will show you mercy.

25 When he showed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go.

26 That man went into the land of the Terrors (Hittite), and built a city, and called the name thereof Almond Tree (Luz): which is the name thereof to this day.

27 Neither did Causing to Forget (Manasseh) drive out the inhabitants of House of Ease (Bethshean) and her towns, nor Sandy (Taanach) and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Generation (Dor) and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Devouring People (Ibleam) and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Place of Crowds (Megiddo) and her towns: but the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) would dwell in that land.

28 So it came to pass, when God Prevails (Israel) was strong, that they put the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

29 Neither did Double Ash-Heap: Doubly Fruitful (Ephraim) drive out the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) that dwelt in Portion (Gezer); but the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) dwelt in Portion (Gezer) among them.

30 Neither did Exalted (Zebulun) drive out the inhabitants of Incense (Kitron), nor the inhabitants of Pasture (Nahalol); but the Humbled Ones (Canaanites) dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31 Neither did Happy (Asher) drive out the inhabitants of His Straitness (Accho), nor the inhabitants of Hunter/Fisher (Zidon), nor of Fertile Place (Ahlab), nor of Deceit (Achzib), nor of Fertile (Helbah), nor of Enclosure (Aphik), nor of Broad Place (Rehob):

32 But the tribe of Happy (Asherites) dwelt among the Humbled Ones (Canaanites), the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

33 Neither did Wrestling (Naphtali) drive out the inhabitants of House of the Sun (Bethshemesh), nor the inhabitants of House of Anat, Goddess of Warfare and Hunting (Bethanath); but he dwelt among the Humbled Ones (Canaanites), the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless, the inhabitants of House of the Sun (Bethshemesh) and of House of Anat, Goddess of Warfare and Hunting (Bethanath) became tributaries to them.

34 The Talkers, Sayers (Amorite) forced the children of Judge (Dan) into the mountain: for they would not permit them to come down to the valley:

35 But The Talkers, Sayers (Amorite) would dwell in Mount of The Sun (Heres) in Field of Deer (Aijalon), and in Place of Foxes (Shaalbbin): yet the hand of the house of I AM Will Add (Joseph) prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

36 So the border of The Talkers, Sayers (Amorite) went up to Scorpion Pass (Akrabbim), from the rock, and upward.
